The future belongs to the helicopter

First of all, Swiss Air-Rescue sent rescue parachutists to be trained in England. They came to the assistance of injured persons in rough terrain by jumping out of aircraft carrying rescue equipment and even avalanche dogs. However, already that same year, a hot-air balloon basket was suspended for the first time under a helicopter in order to be able to transport both rescuers and patients at the same time. These were the first transports in the world carrying an external load beneath the helicopter.

In 1960, Swiss Air-Rescue broke away from the SLRG and founded an association of its own, headed by Fritz Bühler. Gradually new rescue techniques were developed, which were widely acclaimed by experts both at home and abroad. In those days, the principle of transporting medical assistance directly to the scene of the accident was revolutionary and is still undisputed to this day. That same year, the first repatriations of Swiss nationals who had taken seriously ill abroad were carried out.
