Repatriation by scheduled aircraft

For a repatriation on a commercial aircraft, the Operations Centre requires more information from the organising physician than for an air-ambulance flight. Does the patient require to be transported in a sitting or lying position? Is an additional seat, a wheelchair or oxygen needed? How should the medical crew be composed? Only when such details have been clarified can the Operations Centre book the flight. On doing so, it looks for the most direct route involving as few transfers as possible. If possible, the patient’s original ticket is used or the reservation changed.

In order for patients to be transported on board a scheduled aircraft, permission needs to be granted by the airline’s medical service. During the holiday season, it is often very difficult to find enough free seats. Besides making the relevant reservations for both the patient and the medical crew, the Operations Centre arranges for ambulances and books hotel rooms for the Rega staff. During the briefing, all the crew members receive a Crew Information Sheet containing all the necessary details.

If required, the Operations Centre also books the return flights for the patient’s next-of-kin; the cost of these tickets is, however, not covered by Rega.
