Repatriation by air-ambulance

As soon as the Rega physician has decided to repatriate the patient by Rega jet, arrangements for the flight begin. Where necessary, overflight and landing permissions are requested and fuel is organised. The patient, his next-of-kin and the attending physician and nursing staff are informed of the time and details of the flight.

The Operations Centre calls out the crew. During the briefing, which is held an hour before the jet takes off in Zurich, the Operations Coordinator distributes a Crew Information Sheet to each member of staff, containing all the relevant information relating to the flight. He books the patient into the appropriate Swiss hospital and also arranges for an ambulance to transport him from the airport to the hospital.

In an attempt to keep costs to a minimum and better utilise the air-ambulances’ capacity, Rega endeavours whenever possible to combine repatriation flights. As a result, the ambulance-jet might also make a stopover to take additional patients on board.
