Rega 4: Rega base at La Blécherette Airport back to overview

Base in Lausanne -- Zoom
In 1975, Swiss Air-Rescue (SAR) contacted the Lausanne municipal authorities with a view to building a new helicopter base at La Blécherette Airport. On 2 November 1979, an agreement was signed with the city councillor of the time, Jean-Pascal Delamuraz, earmarking a suitable plot of land for a Rega base.

Not long after, a bright-red Alouette III was flying its first primary operations in the canton of Vaud.

On 24 June 1981, the new building, complete with hangar, offices and sleeping quarters, was officially inaugurated. From then on, the Lausanne Rega base was on stand-by around the clock with its three teams, each comprising a pilot, paramedic and physician. The medical service was organised by Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).

Varied scope of operations

The operations carried out by the Lausanne base include road and sports accidents and inter-hospital transfer flights, as well as the transport of organs. The rescue helicopter flies to locations in the towns and the country, in the mountains and on and by the water.

Assisted by its partners, such as the police, fire brigade and other rescue services, the Lausanne base flies approx. 1,000 missions a year, around a third of which are, at least partly, carried out at night.
